How To Build A Profitable Barbershop Clientele – Always Look Your Best

Everyone has heard the saying: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” In today’s competitive world it is more important than ever to look your best at all times. You never know who you are going to run into and how it may affect what you are trying to accomplish with your business and your life. I cannot stress enough the point that we are in the personal grooming business. We are selling appearance. Why would someone want to come to us to make them look better if we are not well groomed? Before we dig a little deeper it is important to understand what personal grooming or being well groomed means.

How To Build A Profitable Barbershop Clientele – Always Look Your Best

A well groomed appearance encompasses your overall appearance from your shoes to your clothes to your haircut. Your haircut is the most important because you are in the business of selling haircuts. How can you sell a haircut if your hair does not look good? My father told me in my original training to always look the part. Finally I asked him one day what that meant. He told me you are in the barber profession so you need to look like a professional. This was some of the best advice he could have ever given me and I am excited to pass it on to you. Take pride in your dress and overall appearance. Make it a point to always look your best. This is the quickest way to build a level of faith and confidence in your ability in the eyes of your potential customers. People are judging you and forming an opinion about you all of the time. If you have not cut their hair yet the only thing they have to judge you on is your appearance and communication skills. This goes for both inside of the barbershop as well as outside. Looking your best will help you to both attract new clients and retain those clients.

Referral Programs

Referral programs are a great way to turbo charge your business. I would recommend offering each of your customers 50% off their next haircut if they send in a new customer to the barbershop. I would also give the new customer a 50% discount as well. This is a great way to get your current customers involved in building your business and feeling a part of it. There are many ways to keep track but the easiest way is to just have your customer write their name down on one of your business cards and have their friend bring that card in with them when they get their haircut. You would just need to keep those cards on file so when the referring customer comes in for his haircut you would know to discount his service. I like this much better than just giving a first time customer discount. This is not fair to all of the customers that have been supporting you over the years. How do you think someone who has been coming to you for 15 years is going to feel when they see you give someone a discount that just came in for the first time?

Family discounts and father and son discounts are also a great way to build your clientele. You could give 10% off the total bill for families that bring in 3 or more of their boys at the same time. You could also do the same for a father and son that come in at the same time. By doing this you are not only helping out your customers financially but you are also creating a tradition. Something they will be doing together as a family every month. This is something these families will remember for a long time and you will be a part of it. This is one of the greatest parts about being a barber is that you actually become part of each of these families’ memories and photo albums. How many referrals do you think you might get from these people?

There are many ways to come up with referral programs. Be creative and have fun. Get your customers involved and excited to help you grow your barbershop. They will take pride in it as well which will lead to an excellent customer retention rate.

A great way to turbo charge asking for referrals is through the use of social media. How long does it take to get a lot of comments, likes, and shares when you post an update? What do you think would happen if you made a quick mention to all of your friends that you could use a little help building your business? It is a good bet that your personal friends would be even more than happy to help you out, share your request, and recommend you personally as well as professionally.

A more subtle way to ask for referrals if you do not want to come right out and ask is by posting pictures of your best work. What will most likely happen is you will have friends liking the pictures and asking if you could cut their hair the same way. You may also get some shares from your closest friends who want to help out even more.

I had a barber that worked for me a while ago that always use to tell me all the time, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” Stay tuned for part three coming soon!

How To Build A Profitable Barbershop Clientele – Ask For Referrals – Part 1

The one thing that will never change with building a business is word of mouth advertising. Personal recommendations are the best form of advertising. Fortunately with the technology available today you can speed up the process by reaching more people a lot faster.

The best way to increase your word of mouth business is simple. All you have to do is ask. That’s it. Just ask each and every one of your customers for help. I learned this from my father. When he would finish each haircut he would say to his customers, “Can you please tell your friends about me?” All of the other barbers in the shop used to chuckle. They thought he was just trying to be funny. He was actually serious and it worked. Customers come to you for a personal service because they are happy with your haircut but also because they like you. If they did not they would not be comfortable sitting in your chair for 30-45 minutes. Due to the personal but professional relationship your customers would be more than happy to help you out. In most cases they would be even flattered you not only asked them, but you trust them to help you build your business.

To make more money and build a large barbershop or men’s clientele you only have to do two things: Attract Clients and Retain Clients. That’s it! It just takes, dedication, discipline, and hard work but if you do those two things you will build a largely successful and profitable clientele. Most things in life are simple but we just have the tendency to over complicate. If you want to lose wait all you have to do is eat less and work out more. It’s that easy but there is a multi-billion dollar industry made up of wait loss products, fad work outs, crash diets, etc. If you want to increase your net worth all you have to do is spend a little less money and make a little more money. Again, a multi-billion dollar industry of  get rich quick investment strategies, courses promising overnight success and riches, etc.

Although accomplishing anything worthwhile can be simple I would like to repeat again that it takes discipline, hard work, and dedication. Keep an eye out for my  two new blog series which will break down how to attract new clients and how to retain those clients  The best part about it is that I will be focusing on the things you can do for FREE that will have the biggest impact!
